Below is an email I sent the Fisheries Minister to request the Recreational Cod Season be returned to its traditional time period of August and first week of September for safety and access reasons. If you agree please help support this request by emailing Gail Shea at gail.shea@parl.gc.ca
Gail Shea,
I am writing to complain about the recreational cod season on PEI.
It was changed two years ago from August -first week in September to September to first week of October.
In the waters adjacent to the Province of Prince Edward Island: From sunrise to sunset each day from August 29 to October 4, 2015
This was done without explanation and for no reason involving science.
The season was not changed in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia or New Brunswick.
This moves the season into a period of cold more volatile weather patterns unsuitable to recreation fishing.
Most seasonal docks are taken out by then because of hurricane threat or off season.
It takes away the ability of Islanders; Islanders that return home in the summer , and cottage owners from away to be able to enjoy the sport.
The only reason this could have been done was to satisfy the deep sea fishing charters, so they are the only game in town during the summer tourist season. If there is science behind it they too should not be fishing cod in August -September.
I guess for an explanation we need to request information thru freedom of information legislation.
The charters are allowed to take 45 cod a day from July 2 to September 5 this year.
Please look into this and return the season to its traditional time period.
Thanks
